The needs and aspirations of the Selati Game Reserve Research Initiative are informed strongly by our vision to create an enduring legacy by conserving and enhancing the biodiversity of the ecosystem through the astute and sustainable management of resources.
The Selati Game Reserve is a “closed system” surrounded by a perimeter fence designed to contain and limit the migration of all large mammal species. This ecosystem must be managed to conserve and enhance the biodiversity therein.
The wellbeing of the ecosystem is underpinned primarily by the dynamic interplay between climate, geology and the populations of fauna and flora species.
Good management decisions rely on us developing a better understanding of this dynamic interplay.
We have been on a journey of discovery since inception. Our early efforts were limited to monitoring activities relating to the wellbeing of the veld and animal populations.
We now realise that improved management of our closed system necessitates a deeper and more profound understanding of the dynamic interplay between climate, geology and the populations of fauna and flora species. This requires a rigorous scientific approach, which is at the heart of all our research projects.
Our research work relies on the support and financial assistance of passionate individuals. Our sustainability model is based on voluntourism. Our Research Assistantships offer individuals the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to conservation through an uplifting, hands-on, wildlife experience.
